Why you would use this resource

At the heart of the Every Child Matters agenda, the 14-19 reforms and the raising of the participation age is the desire to help every young person achieve success and progress in life.

Changes to 14-19 education and to the wider economy have profound implications for the support that we give young people to help them gain qualifications and progress into work that reflects their potential.

These changes have placed the provision of high quality, impartial careers education, supplemented by personalised IAG at the centre of the government’s programme of 14-19 reforms. The future is unpredictable but by taking account of current and emerging trends in education and the world of work and by teaching young people self help skills careers work can provide an element of “future proofing”.

In October 2009 DCSF published new statutory guidance for schools on principles of impartial careers education to strengthen provision and help young people meet the challenges of the 21st century. Using the Focus on Careers in Gloucestershire website and the linked activities to support young people’s awareness of progression routes, understanding of the labour market and research skills contributes directly to the new statutory requirements.

The new “Principles” form the structure for a revised national framework for careers education and a resource pack has been produced to support schools in meeting the new statutory requirements.
